WHAT IS LETTERHEADS?
Started in 1975 by a group of sign painting apprentices who got together to talk about lettering, signs and techniques used to design and produce them. Now it's an unofficial organization around the globe, united by those who love lettering brush strokes and teaching their craft. There can be a couple of different meets every year, where you can find from 30 to 300 people slinging paint, and sharing their knowledge, tricks and tips of the trade. These were originally based in the USA, but eventually spread around the world to Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
WHY IN PORTO THIS TIME?
Porto is naturally rich In history, a city that survived invasions and siege and stood the test of time. In the streets you can check the amazing talent of Portuguese craftsmen throughout the ages. From historic churches covered in the most amazing Azulejos (blue tiles), to incredibly worn out gilded signs and neon signs. Where you can get lost in the vintage shops browsing through endless drawers of paper ephemera and score some really nice pieces for your own collection. Besides the opportunity to connect with your fellow sign friends, be sure to get lost around Porto.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BECOME A LETTERHEAD?
There is no formal membership structure – anyone with an interest in lettering and signs is already a Letterhead. A meet such as this one is an opportunity to connect with other like minded individuals, learn a lot, and have plenty of fun doing so. Read more about the movement here.

Another station where you can drop off is at Senhora da Hora on lines A / B / C / E or F, it is a 10 minute walk from there. The metro ticket price depend on how many “zones” you cross. We advise you to buy a 3 zone ticket, which should go for around 2
Taxi/Uber: Taxis and Ubers are fairly cheap, your best bet Is to use an app to order a cab or Uber for you. Prices from cabs picked off the street the price will depend on the meter. From downtown Porto to the venue and Uber drive should cost you up to 10 euros.
We recommend the Google maps for getting around Porto.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO PORTO LETTERHEADS 2019?
As Mark Oatis says, ‘Bring something to show, trade or demonstrate… or at least, bring your kit and be prepared to get your hands “dirty”’.
Your brushes and kit, as though you were going on a job.
Piece(s) for the auction. Can be Porto Letterheads themed, but this isn’t a requirement.
Any work-in-progress that you’d like to continue with at the meet (we’ll have a mixture of acrylic, wooden and paper panels in a variety of sizes for everyone).
Speakers to play your music (we won’t have anything outside the bar/cafe area).
Enamel, or other flammable paints (we’ll be providing these).
Solvents and other flammable liquids.
WHAT FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE NEARBY?
The venue is located right between downtown Porto and the beach of Matosinhos, in the middle of a residential district, but lucky for us 5 min from the venue there is a shopping mall (Norte Shopping) with everything you might need in an emergency plus a ginormous supermarket Continente.
HOW DO I USE MY PHONE IN PORTUGAL?
Vodafone has a kiosk right in the exit of the airport they have 5gb SIM that runs for around 15 euros.
WHERE CAN I STAY?
The Letterheads event venue is located close to Estádio do Mar station. Since this region is pretty much residential, we are advising people to stay either in downtown Porto or Matosinhos.
In Porto the ideal location for you to stay would be close enough to the Metro. The best stations to be based around are Carolina Michaelis, Lapa, Trindade or Bolhão stations since you want to be close enough to where everything happens when you come back from the meet. Being the oldest part of town, there will be plenty of hills, cobblestones and since buildings might have up to 200 years many places won’t have elevators.
In Matosinhos, the closest to Matosinhos Sul station the better. You will be 5 min from the beach. What else to say? Many newer buildings here (ELEVATORS YES!), no hills and a lot of restaurants. There is a street where dozens of restaurants grill fresh fish directly in front of you.
WHAT HASHTAG SHOULD I USE?
We encourage people to tag social media posts about the meet with #PortoLetterheads.

WHAT ARE THE PORTUGUESE WORDS I SHOULD KNOW TO GET BY IN PORTO?
Bem-vindo/Welcome, Obrigado/Thank You, Por favor/Please, Com Licença/Excuse me, Cerveja/Beer, Casa de Banho/Toilet.
More will be added here later on. If you want to contribute painting a few pieces to help us with the decoration of the venue let us know via email@example.com
CAN I BRING MY SPOUSE/PARTNER?
Yes! We do encourage them to refrain to stay in the classrooms or panel jam areas where they can bump into someone or something. They're free to roam around the rest of the venue, the outside area, cafeteria and exhibition. We are working out the details to provide them with lunches as well through the spouse/partner ticket. These details will be released closer to the event.
